All Details

A tough and colorful foliage plant, known for its striking, sword-shaped leaves that are vibrant green on top and deep purple underneath. It forms dense, low clumps and produces small white flowers tucked inside purple, boat-shaped bracts, giving it a unique and lasting decorative appeal.

I am a herbaceous perennial with a dense, clumping growth habit from a central base.

My most distinctive feature is my stiff, lance-shaped leaves that are a glossy, metallic green on the upper surface and a rich, vibrant purple or burgundy on the underside. The leaves are arranged in a rosette.

I produce small, three-petaled white flowers that are almost hidden inside purple, shell-like or boat-shaped bracts (modified leaves) at the base of the plant, earning me the name "Moses-in-the-Cradle" or "Oyster Plant."

I am incredibly hardy and tolerant of a wide range of conditions.

I am native to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

I am drought-tolerant once established but prefer moderately moist soil. Water me when the top inch of soil feels dry.

I am very sensitive to overwatering, which can quickly lead to root rot. Excellent drainage is essential.

I can tolerate occasional dryness and will wilt if severely underwatered, but I recover well.

I thrive in average indoor humidity and do not require misting.

I thrive in bright, indirect light to partial sun. This brings out the most intense purple coloration on the leaf undersides.

I can tolerate lower light conditions, but my growth will be slower, and the leaves may become more green than purple.

I can also handle some direct morning sun, but intense afternoon sun may scorch the leaves, causing faded or brown patches.

I am very adaptable to various light levels.

I prefer warm temperatures and am best suited to USDA zones 9-11 as a perennial outdoors. I am often grown as a houseplant in cooler climates.

My ideal range is 18°C to 27°C.

I am sensitive to frost and prolonged cold below 5°C, which will damage the foliage.

I am excellent as a ground cover in warm, shaded gardens, in borders, or as a striking container plant for patios and indoors.

Use a well-draining, all-purpose potting mix. Adding some sand or perlite improves drainage.

I spread by offsets, forming a dense mat. Divide clumps every few years in spring to control spread and rejuvenate.

My unique flowers and bracts appear intermittently throughout the year.

I am a light feeder. Feed me monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer.

Do not fertilize in fall and winter.

Over-fertilizing can cause excessive, weak growth and dilute leaf color.

Scientific Name: Tradescantia spathacea (formerly Rhoeo spathacea)

Common Names: Moses-in-the-Cradle, Oyster Plant, Boat Lily

Plant Family: Commelinaceae

Plant Type: Evergreen perennial herb

My sap contains compounds that can be irritating. If ingested by pets (cats, dogs), I can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and skin dermatitis. It's best to keep me out of reach of curious pets and handle with care when pruning.

While not a top performer, my foliage contributes to basic air purification. I am primarily grown for my bold, bi-colored foliage and unique form.

Provides vibrant, year-round foliage color with minimal care.

Extremely hardy and tolerates neglect, drought, and poor soil.

Unique, long-lasting purple bracts and flowers add extra interest.

Fast-growing and makes an excellent, colorful ground cover in frost-free climates.

Root Rot: The main threat, caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

Leggy, Sparse Growth: Caused by too little light. The plant stretches, and leaves lose their compact, colorful appearance.

Brown Leaf Tips: Can be caused by fluoride in tap water, low humidity, or occasional underwatering.

Mealybugs & Scale: Can infest the tight leaf axils and undersides of leaves.

Leaf Scorch: Brown, dry patches from too much direct, hot sun.

I am a long-lived, fast-spreading perennial. In ideal outdoor conditions, I can spread via offsets and live for many years, forming large colonies. As a potted houseplant, I can thrive for several years but may become leggy and benefit from being divided or restarted from cuttings. I propagate very easily from stem cuttings or division, allowing my vibrant colors to be maintained indefinitely.

Everyday: from 9:00AM to 7:00PM
