All Details

Hello, foliage fancier! I am the Aralia, a diverse group of plants celebrated for my striking, often dramatic foliage and architectural forms. From delicate, lacy leaves to bold, tropical shapes, I bring texture and sophistication to any space. I am a relatively low-maintenance plant that grows with an upright, sometimes quirky habit, adding height and interest as a stunning specimen tree, shrub, or houseplant.

I am a woody plant that can be a shrub, tree, or perennial, with many varieties popular as houseplants.
My most captivating feature is my beautiful foliage, which can be finely divided, glossy, variegated, or deeply serrated, depending on my species. I often have an elegant, upright growth pattern with interesting, sometimes spiny, stems.
I am a fantastic choice for adding a structural element and a touch of the exotic to your indoor or outdoor garden.

My many species are native to a wide range of areas, including Asia, the Americas, and Australia.

I prefer consistent moisture but am quite sensitive to overwatering.
Water me thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Always allow excess water to drain away completely, as I despise "wet feet."
In winter, when my growth slows, reduce watering frequency significantly, allowing the soil to dry out more between waterings.

I am adaptable but do best in bright, indirect light.
I can tolerate medium light, but my growth may slow, and variegated varieties may lose their distinctive coloring.
Direct, harsh sun can scorch my delicate leaves. An east or north-facing window is often ideal.

I thrive in average to warm room temperatures. My ideal range is between 15°C and 24°C.
I am sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature drops. Most varieties cannot tolerate frost and are best suited for USDA zones 9-11 if grown outdoors.

Potting Mix: I need a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Adding perlite or extra orchid bark can improve drainage and aeration for my roots.

Pot: Choose a pot with ample drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Repotting: Repot me in spring every 2-3 years, or when I become root-bound. I don't mind being slightly pot-bound.

Pruning: You can prune me to control my height and encourage a bushier, more compact shape. Wear gloves for spiny varieties like the Ming Aralia.

I am a light to moderate feeder.
During my active growing season (spring and summer), feed me with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength every 4-6 weeks.
Do not fertilize in the autumn and winter.

Common Species: Polyscias spp. (Ming Aralia, Dinner Plate Aralia), Fatsia japonica (Japanese Aralia), Aralia elegantissima (False Aralia)

Common Names: Often goes by specific names like Ming Aralia, Spider Aralia, or Japanese Fatsia.

Plant Family: Araliaceae

Plant Type: Woody Perennial Shrub or Tree

I am toxic to cats and dogs.
I contain saponins and other compounds that can cause vomiting, drooling, and oral irritation if ingested. Please keep me out of reach of your curious pets.

As a leafy plant with a good surface area, I am effective at helping to remove common household toxins from the air, contributing to a fresher and healthier indoor environment.

Architectural Interest: My unique form and textured foliage make me a living sculpture.

Air Purifying: I help clean the indoor air.

Variety: With so many types, there's an Aralia for every aesthetic, from delicate and feathery to bold and tropical.

Adaptable: I can tolerate a range of indoor conditions once acclimated.

Leaf Drop: My most common complaint! This is usually caused by a sudden change in environment, overwatering, or cold drafts.

Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.

Brown Leaf Tips/Crispy Edges: Caused by low humidity, underwatering, or a buildup of salts and minerals from tap water.

Pests: Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale, especially in dry, indoor conditions.

I am a long-lived perennial. With proper care, I can be a beautiful and enduring part of your plant collection for many years, even decades.

Everyday: from 9:00AM to 7:00PM
