All Details

A dramatic and exotic-looking prayer plant, celebrated for its stunning, patterned foliage that resembles the skin of its namesake reptile. Its large, lance-shaped leaves feature alternating dark green ovals and feathered edges against a light green background, with rich purple undersides, creating a vibrant display of color and pattern.

I am a clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial grown exclusively for my spectacular ornamental leaves. My most striking feature is my large, upright, wavy-edged leaves with a mesmerizing pattern: a series of dark green, painterly blotches aligned along the central vein, resembling reptile scales, set against a background of light yellowish-green.The undersides of my leaves are a deep, rich maroon or purple, adding to the dramatic effect, especially as my leaves move.Like other prayer plants, my leaves exhibit nyctinasty—they rise and open in the morning and lower at night, as if in prayer.

I am native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil.

I prefer consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Use a well-draining mix and water when the top inch of soil feels dry.I am sensitive to both drought (causes curling, crisp leaves) and overwatering (causes yellowing and root rot).I have an absolute requirement for high humidity (60%+). Low humidity will quickly cause brown, crispy leaf edges and tips. A humidifier, pebble tray, or placement in a bathroom is ideal.Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible, as I am sensitive to fluoride and salts in tap water.

I thrive in medium to bright, indirect light. I am an understory plant and must be protected from any direct sunlight, which will scorch and fade my beautiful leaves.I can tolerate lower light conditions better than many patterned plants, but my growth will slow, and the vibrant contrast in my leaf patterns may diminish. An east or north-facing window is perfect.

I am a true tropical and prefer consistently warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.I am extremely sensitive to cold drafts, sudden temperature drops, and temperatures below 15°C.I am grown almost exclusively as a houseplant (USDA zones 11-12 if outdoors in a protected, shaded spot).

I am a stunning focal point plant for tabletops, plant stands, or as part of a lush, tropical indoor grouping.Use a light, peaty, well-draining potting mix (an African violet mix works well).Ensure the pot has drainage holes. I prefer to be slightly root-bound.Wipe my leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free and efficient at photosynthesis.

Feed me every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer (half strength is safe).Do not fertilize in fall and winter when growth slows.Over-fertilizing will burn my roots and cause leaf tip burn.

Scientific Name: Goeppertia insignis (formerly Calathea lancifolia)Common Names: Rattlesnake Plant, Rattlesnake CalatheaPlant Family: MarantaceaePlant Type: Evergreen perennial herb

I am non-toxic to cats and dogs, making me a beautiful and safe choice for pet-friendly homes.

While not the most powerful, my broad leaves contribute to a healthier indoor environment by absorbing common VOCs and releasing oxygen. My high transpiration rate also helps humidify the air.

Provides breathtaking, year-round foliage with an exotic pattern.Safe for households with pets and children.Adds movement and life to a room with its daily leaf rituals.Thrives in the lower-light conditions common in homes.

Brown, Crispy Leaf Edges: The classic sign of low humidity or chemical sensitivity to tap water.Curling Leaves: Usually a sign of underwatering or too much light.Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering.Faded/Washed-Out Leaf Color: Caused by too much direct sunlight.Spider Mites: My arch-nemesis, especially in dry indoor air. They cause stippling and webbing on the undersides of leaves. Increase humidity and inspect regularly.

I am a long-lived perennial houseplant with proper care. While I can be considered somewhat fussy regarding humidity and water, if kept happy, I can thrive for many years. Individual leaves last for several months to over a year. I grow from a rhizome and can be divided during repotting in spring to propagate and rejuvenate the plant, ensuring its beauty continues indefinitely.
